A train and time travel in St. Johann

After a comfortable journey by train and bus, the Time Travel Trail takes you into the eventful history of the town of St. Johann.

In 1875, the railway line between Salzburg and Zell am See was opened. For St. Johann, connection to the railway network brought a tourist and economic boom. However, the place was already an economic center 4000 years earlier, triggered by copper mining at Mitterberg in Mühlbach. The thematic trail leads to a first Bronze Age “industrial settlement” on the meadow of the Hubbauern. More than 10,000 ceramic fragments were uncovered – and probably also put together. The next stop, dealing with the expulsion of Protestants in the years 1731 and 1732, also left traces. Namely deserted farms, almost three quarters of the population around St. Johann left their homeland for religious reasons! The trail presents the Gmachmühlen, the forest, the servants and many other topics. In addition, the respective farms embedded in the magnificent landscape are introduced in detail. This time travel brings us closer to the history and the people!

Directions

Buses depart from St. Johann station to the town center (stop St. Johann am Dom), but there is also a pleasant 15-minute walk here, which branches off to the right at the station, crosses the Salzach and then follows the signage on the left. From the center, it goes to the neo-Gothic church (bus stop), along it on the left and before the gas station, again left, up the steep stairs. Past the valley station of the Hahnbaum lift, the path follows the driveway to the Hubbauern, to Hetzenbichl and the Großunterbergbauern. Now a gravel path crosses the meadow, then the Arzenbach and goes from the Hof Zacherlegg, a highly awarded schnapps producer, back to the downhill driveway. At the Lehenbauer, a shorter forest and meadow path variant ("St. Johann over the Tree Course") branches off to the left; the Time Travel Trail remains on the asphalt road and also addresses the topics "Hereditary Farms" and "Servants". After the torrent dam in the S-curve, a short stair ascent branches off to the left and leads into the Tree Course variant. Past the outdoor swimming pool, the path leads back to the center (bus stop) or straight on to the station.
