The fastest route to this destination

Dötzenkopf loop high above Bayerisch Gmain and Berchtesgaden

Short, scenic hike to one of the lowest thousanders (1001 m) in the Berchtesgaden Alps.

The local mountain of Bad Reichenhall and Bayerisch Gmain offers a beautiful view of the Reichenhall basin. The path is very well developed and leads with numerous wire ropes, bridges, and wooden ladders to the viewpoint. The route is not recommended when wet due to many steep forest sections. In the unofficial “Dötzi Skyrace” the fastest/most and most unusual runs on the Bayrisch Gmain hiking parking lot-Dötzenkopf route are counted. The time record is 15:56 min, so get training!

Directions

From the Bad Reichenhall festival square we go to the Stadtkanzel viewpoint. Here we arrive again at the end of the tour. Now we climb steep hairpin bends in the forest towards the Bildstöckl Chapel. Those who turn off here will see Hochstaufen. Back to the main path, continue uphill in the forest and if you want, you can detour to Türmereck, which offers a view of the Saalachsee and the Predigtstuhlbahn for us. Shortly afterwards we turn left (unless we want to climb the higher Spechtenkopf or the Predigstuhl). The crossing below Spechtkopf leads through steep gullies and landslides but is always well secured. Then we descend gracefully in winding paths a little to the Dötzenkopf. The descent from Dötzenkopf is steep in the forest until we reach the flatter ridge of Wappbachkopf. There we keep left on a forest road and cross the slope back to the Stadtkanzel, where we meet the ascent path and descend to the festival square.
