Lungau Castle Hike

FROM MAUTERNDORF CASTLE TO MOOSHAM CASTLE AND ON TO ST. MARGARETHEN.

Although Lungau covers 1,000 km² and has 20,000 inhabitants, resulting in a population density of only 20 residents per square kilometer, the smallest of the five Salzburg districts had a high density of castles. Anyone entering via the old Roman road over the Radstadt Tauern is immediately greeted by the imposing Mauterndorf Castle. In earlier times, travelers had to stop to pay the required toll; nowadays travelers should definitely pause to admire this magnificent stronghold, even for a small fee. Around the castle, a brand new, cleverly designed circular route has been created, and inside the castle awaits an extremely family-friendly exhibition. Quite different is the impressive Moosham Castle, which is privately owned by the Wilczek family. Visits here are only possible as part of a guided tour, but possibly with the castle lady, Mrs. Theresita Wilczek, personally. At the final destination, in the valley floor at St. Margarethen, there is no more castle, but a charming place with lovely places to eat and a bus stop for the return journey.

Directions

From the Mauterndorf Stampfl bus stop (bus 280) it is only a few steps to the castle or to the 15-minute circular route around the castle. Our path, however, leads over the historic bridge right through the village to Gasthof Weitgasser and crosses the federal road. Here is another possible starting point at the Mauterndorf Ledermoos bus stop (buses 270, 280). The route follows the signs to the "airport," crosses the Taurach there, first turns left, then immediately right, and from then on always follows the signpost "Moosham Castle." Passing Kressenbach-Keusche and Hansalgut, the sunny meadow path runs 2.5 km to the houses in Neusess (bus stop). The path crosses to the edge of the forest and meets after 20 minutes the short access road to the impressive Moosham Castle. Along the access road back to the underpass of the federal road. Above on the B 99 is the bus stop St. Margarethen-Staig, or the path leads left branching another half hour (2.5 km) further into the village of St. Margarethen (town center bus stop).
