Lidaun crossing

The Lidaun, at 1,237 meters, is not a high mountain, but its view over the Wiestal reservoir, Göll east face, and Untersberg is impressive. For children, a bear cave holds a surprise. A nice public transport hike from Faistenau to Hof near Salzburg

Although bears have not been in the lake region for a long time – the last bear in the Salzburg region was shot in Faistenau in 1838 – bear Moritz supposedly passed by here in 2006. Austria’s last brown bear came from the Ötscher area and is said to have lived in the Salzkammergut for several years before disappearing. Tourism officials took this as an opportunity to set up a themed trail on the way up to the Lidaun with a bear cave below the summit path. Now bears are known to be returning after several sightings – let’s see when they first show up in the Fuschlsee region.

Directions

Route: Directly at the stop, turn right into Lidaunstraße. After passing several houses, you reach a cross spruce. Here just a few meters more on the street until the forest road begins on the right at the edge of the forest. This now rises after a long curve to the north. The path gains height, passes a hut above the Klaushof lift, and turns left. At the signposted junction, take the slightly steeper forest path to the left and enjoy the beautiful view of the Fuschelsee. At the saddle, you finally reach the summit cross. Descent via the bear cave, which you can also enter, through the forest heading south. The path leads to a forest road. Do not descend to Faistenau here but cross the road and follow the forest path to the Hofer saddle (932 m). Passing a hunting hut, go right down several hairpin bends on the forest road – or via shortcut forest paths – to Lebachstraße in Hof. Walk to the training ground, then right through the settlement where a forest path on the left leads to an avenue into the center of Hof. Stop on Wolfgangsee street.
