THIS ROUTE SOUNDS LIKE A LONG-DISTANCE TRIP, BUT THANKS TO BUS LINE 156, THE PATH FROM ST. LORENZ THROUGH THE SCHWARZINDIEN DISTRICT IS MANAGEABLE AND ALSO PERFECT FOR ANY WEATHER CONDITION.
The origin of Mondsee’s name can be explained fairly well: from the noble family “Mano” (Lake of Mano), through hearing and writing errors, it became Mond-See (Moon Lake). It gets more complicated with the Schwarzindien district in the small municipality of St. Lorenz. Young bohemians, students, and other free spirits found their paradise near the shores of Mondsee and in the summer of 1879 simply named it Schwarzindien. The exotic neologism was equally well received by summer visitors, locals, and business owners. The entrepreneurial Mondsee merchant Eduard Weyringer opened a trendy inn, and as a highlight, there was even a stop called “Schwarzindien” on the slightly later completed Salzkammergut railway. Today, Schwarzindien at Mondsee remains a dream destination, although primarily for the well-off who can afford the sought-after building land. The view of the lake, a public outdoor pool, and the whole atmosphere are free of charge and perfectly round off the all-weather excursion between the picturesque St. Lorenz church at the foot of Drachenwand and the stately basilica in Mondsee.   Â

From the bus stop of line 156 "St. Lorenz Church," it is only a few meters from federal road 154 to the unmistakable church in the small village of St. Lorenz. The church still exists thanks to the clever tactics of the church authorities who managed to prevent its threatened demolition during the Josephine church reforms in the second half of the 18th century by elevating the former subsidiary church to its own parish. From the church, the path follows the marked cycling route R 2, which runs on low-traffic side roads or completely car-free to Mondsee. After 1.5 km, the route branches left before the site of the cult company Camaro, passes under the federal road, and in the Schwarzindien district gets ever closer to the lake shore. Past the yacht club and the limnological institute, it briefly follows the road. At the beach volleyball court, it returns to the sidewalk to the right, and after the Transport and Ischlerbahn Museum either takes the shortest way left over Franz-Kreutzberger-Straße to the bus terminal or offers an enjoyable detour through the town of Mondsee.

Access to the St. Lorenz / Mondsee Church stop with bus 156 or 597 either from the Mondsee bus terminal (to get there from Salzburg main station Südtiroler Platz by bus 140) or with bus 156 or 597 from St. Gilgen bus station (to get there from Salzburg main station Südtiroler Platz by bus 150).
