From Werfen to Tenneck via the Feuersengköpfl
First following the footsteps of Sound of Music and then much more solitary on forest and meadow paths to the iron industry town of Tenneck.
The 1965 completed film Sound of Music, with 1.5 billion viewers, is one of the most successful productions in film history. The sentimental story of the Trapp family, based on true events, won 5 Oscars. One of the main scenes was filmed with the breathtaking view of the town of Werfen and Hohenwerfen Castle at Gschwandanger. The Sound of Music Trail, with its many stations and the end point Gschwandanger, commemorates this Hollywood production. The second part leads differently to the inconspicuous Feuersengköpfl (889 m), but from this forest mountain a spectacular view of the Salzach valley and the Tenneck ironworks also opens up. At the station in Tenneck, the hike could end after just under 3 hours, or it continues on the very rewarding, 1-hour “church hiking trail” on the other side of the Salzach back to Werfen.

Directions
From Werfen station, the path leads over the Salzach, underpasses the federal highway and follows route 401 towards Gschwandanger in the town center. A slightly longer variant only branches off after 100 m, opposite the new info office in the former probate court building, to the left to the Sound of Music Trail starting here. Due to construction work, this ascent is closed until mid-June 2024. After 40 minutes, the scenic Gschwandanger is reached, where the Trapp family danced singing Do-Re-Mi across the meadow. An original photo installation recalls this. Our path already branches right at the lower edge of Gschwandanger and follows the signposted direction "Feuersengkopf". From the wooded summit plateau, the trail leads on the northwest side to the "Riesenplatte" fork and then follows the path downhill in the direction of Tenneck (trail 11). After 1 hour there, the route runs left along the factory grounds, crosses the Salzach, and has already reached the small Tenneck station. Those who do not want to end the hike after a total of 2.5 hours follow the underpass and then turn left onto Wimmstraße. The further route back to Werfen now follows the continuously signposted "church hiking trail". Wonderful views open up again of the castle, the Tennengebirge mountains and the Hochkönig, and towards the end also of the highway. After the Salzach bridge, the last kilometer to Werfen station branches left following the river course.
