Picturesque hike in Sportgastein

A picturesque and at the same time easy circular hike in Sportgastein (Naßfeld Valley, Salzburg) is the Naßfeld Valley Circular Trail, also known as the Böckstein–Naßfeld Circular Trail. This hike combines impressive high mountain scenery with a relaxed route and is perfect for enthusiasts, families, or anyone longing for fresh mountain air and tranquility.

In the southernmost corner of the Gastein Valley, where the road ends and the realm of the mountains begins, lies a quiet, wide-open high valley: the Naßfeld Valley in Sportgastein. Here, at over 1,600 meters above sea level, an alpine world of almost untouched beauty opens up – a natural jewel that fascinates at any time of year but reveals its full magic especially in summer and early autumn.

The Naßfeld circular hike is an ideal path to explore this landscape at leisure. It is easy to walk, without steep climbs or technical challenges, yet rich in impressions, moods, and small wonders of nature. A trail that does not overwhelm but slows down the pace – and touches the heart.

Directions

The route starts at the spacious car park in Naßfeld, at the end of the Gastein Alpine Road (toll required). Right from the start, a magnificent view opens up over the wide high valley, framed by the imposing peaks of the Goldberg Group. Particularly impressive is the Schareck (3,123 m) in the background, whose glaciers are sometimes still visible well into the summer. The path initially leads right along the valley floor on a well-maintained gravel trail, past blooming alpine meadows, small streams, and traditional alpine huts. With some luck, you may encounter marmots or see eagles circling over the slopes. Benches and resting places invite you to linger repeatedly – ideal for enjoying the silence and panorama. After about half an hour, you reach the idyllic Vorderschneealm or a little further along the Bockhartsee hut (with the possibility to stop for refreshments). If you like, you can take a short detour to the lower Bockhartsee – a crystal-clear mountain lake nestled in a high alpine scenery. For the circular tour, turn left and walk back comfortably on the other side of the valley. The return route partly follows a nature trail that informs about the flora, fauna, and geology of the region – especially exciting for families with children. At the end, the circle closes again at the starting point, where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the entire Naßfeld once more on the last stretch.
