From Werfenweng over the Brandlberg peaks to St. Martin
An equally long and scenic alpine hike over the gentle Brandlberg peaks on the green side of the Tennengebirge.
In contrast to the rocky main massif, the southern “front garden” of the Tennengebirge, not least due to the favourable spring situation, presents itself as an ideal ground for alpine farming. And of course also for hikers who appreciate such foot- and refreshment-friendly conditions just as much as the alpine animals. The centrepiece and highest point of this long crossing are the gentle Brandlberg peaks, just under 1,800 metres high. Whereas the Hochkönig massif and the peaks of the main Alpine ridge previously dominated the view to the south, now the Gosaukamm and Dachstein additionally enrich the unique panorama. Towards the end, the Karalm (1,438 m) offers an attractive place to rest and eat.
Those who want to shorten the roughly 6-hour crossing by about 2 hours can opt for the ascent with the Ikarus gondola and then join the described route after the 30-minute descent to the Proksch-Haus.

Directions
Before the ascent to the valley station of the Ikarus cable car, paths 51 and 52 branch off to the right and reach the closed Strussingalm (1,524 m) after 2 hours as a leisurely or somewhat steeper variant. Before the building, turn left and follow the wide alpine path 52 b towards the Proksch Haus, which can also be bypassed on the left to save elevation. Continue on path 51 towards Brandstättalm until the junction Brandlberg peaks (path 60) to the right. With some loss of altitude into the Jochriedel and turning right (path 60) over the Brandlberg peaks. This royal stage ends with the Frommer Hochalm (1,712 m), which is unstaffed but has a watering trough. The path 90 branching off to the left to St. Martin leads partly over steeply sloping flanks past the rustic Koreinalm (unstaffed) into the bright larch forest and further to the staffed Karalm (1,438 m). Shortly before the alpine pasture, path 81 runs first as a trail and then over the forest road to the right onto the access road to the Buttermilchalm (closed) and now follows the half-hour path down to St. Martin. The bus stop is diagonally opposite the church.
