Directions

We start our Untersberg crossing in Hintergern at the stop "Hintergern parking lot". From here, we follow Gerner Straße uphill, which soon becomes Unterbergweg. Here, we follow the Rupertiweg up to our first stage destination, the Stöhrhaus. The path mostly leads pleasantly through the forest but requires surefootedness higher up. You should reserve your sleeping place at the Stöhrhaus in advance. Due to the geological structure of the Untersberg massif, water is scarce, so there are neither showers nor warm water at the Stöhrhaus. After a hearty dinner, an epic sunset, a relaxing night, and a delicious breakfast at the Stöhrhaus, the route continues over the Untersberg plateau towards Geiereck. The path is largely well marked with color markers. Be sure to keep an eye out for chamois here. The path leads over long stretches through karst terrain, past countless dwarf pines. Be sure to stay on the path. The karstic nature of the Untersberg massif causes numerous fissures that should be strictly avoided. It is no coincidence that Germany's largest known cave – the Riesending cave – is located in the Untersberg. After starting at the Stöhrhaus, we continue following the Rupertiweg (Alpine Club path 417) over the Berchtesgadener Hochthron, past the Hochalpkopf, through the Mittagsscharte, and over the Salzburger Hochthron to Geiereck. From here, you take the Untersbergbahn with fantastic views towards the valley.
