From Hochfilzen in Tyrol over the Römersattel to Weißbach in the Saalachtal
WELL SECURED OVER THE MILITARY TRAINING AREA HOCHFILZEN TO THE RÖMERSATTEL AND ON TO THE VORDERKASERKLAMM IN THE SAALACHTAL.
Whether Romans actually crossed the saddle between Pinzgau and Tyrol is not quite certain; what is certain are the pilgrims, especially miners from Leogang and Fieberbrunn, who after the completion of the Maria Schnee church in 1682 pilgrimaged over the pass in large numbers. A few years ago, the pilgrimage path idea was revived by the enterprising pastor Oswald Scherer from Embach near Lend, since then a stage of the overall 125 km long Pinzgauer Marienweg runs from Hochfilzen into the Saalachtal. However, the scenic highlights lie on the Salzburg side. From the Römersattel a beautiful hiking path leads through lonely forest terrain to the Vorderkaserklamm, followed by an adventure trail with many bathing bays before the small pilgrim walk ends at the St. Martin Vorderkaserklamm stop. The Tyrolean side is dominated by the Hochfilzen military training area, which allows crossing only on the designated (asphalt) path, but not ‘sidesteps’.

Directions
From Hochfilzen station (980 m above sea level), go through the underpass into the eastward commercial area (magnesite plant) and now left along the street for 150 m to the "Bachlfeld" junction on the right. Past the sports field, the route leads to the access road to the Army Sports Center and follows it turning right through the barracks area. This includes the famous biathlon center (left), where training also takes place diligently in summer. Further up is the summer pasture of the Haflinger horses, which are trained here as pack animals. Half an hour later, the flat Römersattel (1,202 m) and the end of the military training area are reached. The route now becomes more wooded and soon turns left from the forest road onto the narrow path. Through the beautiful mixed forest, it steadily descends and the path reaches the creek bed. In the Roßruck Gorge the terrain narrows again temporarily; 20 minutes later there is the option for a worthwhile detour to the Vorderkaserklamm (730 m). The last 45-minute section to the federal road is particularly attractive with bathing lakes, playgrounds and waterfront areas and a wonderful summer destination for families. The St. Martin Vorderkaserklamm stop is diagonally opposite the junction on the right.
