From Koppl via the Gaisberg to Glasenbach

Pure variety: over the Nockstein ridge past bizarre rock formations to the Gaisberg and then down to Glasenbach on the sunny side with a view of the city of Salzburg.

The Nockstein (1,043 m) on the north side of the Gaisberg is an extremely striking feature. No wonder that the rock block just over 1,000 m high was mentioned as a border post in the earliest documents of the archbishopric, and that the Austrian Tourist Club continued this “land-marker tradition” with a special summit obelisk in 1907. The Gaisberg (1,288 m), closely connected to the Nockstein by a ridge line, can easily compete: the striking red and white, 100 m high transmitter radiates its signals both visually and via radio far across the country. The path from the summit to the Zistel then follows the route of the legendary Gaisberg cog railway, while the following westward descent over the Rauchenbühel ridge to Glasenbach offers the most beautiful views that practically fall into the lap of Gaisberg visitors.

Directions

From the Koppl Sperrbrücke stop, the route leads a few meters along the local access road towards Koppl but immediately turns right again onto Sperrweg. The next destination is the Riedlwirt; near the tennis courts, the hiking trail 70 branches off to the left towards Nockstein and the Gaisberg summit. The half-hour detour to the Nockstein requires surefootedness, then it continues again on trail 70, which after 30 minutes joins the Gaisbergrundweg on the right. A steep summit trail branches off a quarter of an hour later. At the summit plateau, nice places to eat await, and possibly bus 151 for the return trip to the city of Salzburg. The descent on foot down to the Zistelalm (962 m) follows the former cog railway route (trail 15). The traditional inn of the Hauser family is only occasionally open, but many rest areas along the Zistel meadow invite you to scenic picnics. From the Zistel, the further descent continues on trail 810 over the sunny Rauchenbühel ridge. The Rauchenbühel hut (975 m), somewhat hidden on the edge of the forest, is a popular place to eat on weekends (10 am–5 pm). Passing the settlement Vorderfager, the forest path leads to Glasenbach to the bus stops at the roundabout.
