From Kolm Saigurn through the Rauriser primeval forest to the Bodenhaus

A sunny high-altitude hike along the western valley flank from the former mining center Kolm Saigurn via the Mitterastenalm to the traditional inn Bodenhaus. Always in view: the most attractive peaks of the Goldberg group.

Many visitors consider the valley end at Kolm Saigurn at the foot of the Hoher Sonnblick to be the most beautiful in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Since the end of the 13th century, the precious metal after which the Goldberg group is named may have been even more the focus of interest. During the then emerging heyday, 10% of the world supply of gold was mined in the mountains around Rauris. Mini-nuggets may still be found today in the Rauriser Ache, but the true treasure in the valley is the unique nature. With some luck, the bearded vultures from the Krumltal are circling high in the air, or near the ground golden-yellow chanterelle-like mushrooms appear at the right time. A sure experience is the centuries-old Rauriser primeval forest, crisscrossed with countless deep black moor ponds. Immediately followed by the panoramic eye-level view of Sonnblick, Hocharn, and Ritterkopf. Not to forget the wonderful fare at the Mitterastenalm and in the Bodenhaus…

Directions

Shortly before the final stop Kolm Saigurn Ammererhof, it is worth looking to the right, because there you can see with what enormous force a rock and debris flow devastated the valley floor in summer 2023. No people or buildings were harmed; our starting point, the traditional Ammererhof (1,626 m), stands on a safe elevation at the entrance to the Rauriser primeval forest. The marked extra loop (nature trail) through the untouched blowdown forest on the way back to the Durchgang and Filzenalm opens up additional insights. Shortly before the managed Filzenalm, path 24 branches off to the left and continues with slight ascents below the private Seealm (1,862 m). Then follows a 2 km long crossing through the forest to the idyllically located Mitterastenalm (1,762 m). The steeply left-branching descent to the Bodenhaus stop (path 25) is steep throughout but offers a further fascinating highlight in the lower third with the detour to the Rauriser spring, a focus topic on water in Rauris.
