Through the Weitwörth floodplain to Oberndorf
An equally calming as exciting walk through the bird and landscape paradise between Weitwörth and Oberndorf.
Along the 227 km long journey of the Salzach from Oberpinzgau to its confluence with the Inn, there are not many of these original river landscapes left, as can be seen after the renaturation measures between Anthering and St. Georgen. The value of the floodplain forests is being re-evaluated in times of heavy rain events, as here the Salzach finally has plenty of space to expand without causing damage. In fact, the soft floodplain needs the flooding and adapts perfectly to the conditions. In Weitwörth, the nature and flood protection officers of the state have taken decisive action. A model project has emerged in which the tiny, paradisiacal kingfisher finds its place just as much as the large floodplain inhabitants. A circular trail guides visitors around the renatured gravel pond and leads further to the Salzach bank. The subsequent section to Oberndorf then shows the floodplain from an almost untouched side. A special delight is visiting the floodplain in spring when an incredibly versatile carpet of birdsong spreads over the forest.

Directions
The starting point is Nußdorf-Weitwörth train stop. The marked path into the floodplain follows the railway line for another 200 m towards Oberndorf and then turns left after 15 minutes to reach the floodplain workshop. The path describes a half-hour loop around the lake, opening the best views of the birdlife and the Salzach and then turns towards Oberndorf. After the soft floodplain, adapted to flooding, follows the hard floodplain, which consists more of tall trees. The long avenue consists of many ancient oaks, which were planted for hunting reasons not entirely selflessly, as the acorns attract wild boars & co. The path crosses the Reitbach and follows it to the Salzach confluence. Now either take the direct way right to Oberndorf-Laufen train stop or follow the towpath along the Salzach to the magnificent border bridge Oberndorf-Laufen and only then through the town center to the train stop or Oberndorf station.
