The classic on Salzburg’s local mountain: The Gaisbergrund hiking trail is a wonderful walk for everyone – including with strollers. The section from Zistelalm to the viewing platform overlooking Salzburg is even barrier-free – so accessible with a wheelchair.

The Gaisbergrund hiking trail – as the name suggests – runs once around the Gaisberg and offers spectacular views of Salzburg, the Flachgau region, the Untersberg, the Watzmann family, …

Highlight for families: Right next to Zistelalm at the start (or end) point is a great adventure playground.

The Gaisbergrund hiking trail is almost accessible year-round; in snowy conditions, the wooden bridge at the viewing point is closed (sometimes cleared). In spring, the Gaisbergrund hiking trail is often closed longer (partially) due to forestry work. Closures are usually reported on the City of Salzburg website.

Directions

Take bus 151 from Mirabellplatz to the Zistelalm bus stop. From there, follow the signs to the Gaisbergrund hiking trail, where you can either walk the path counterclockwise towards Koppel or start at the playground next to Zistelalm. If you are not sure whether you want to walk the entire route, better go left (clockwise); here you reach the viewpoint after a short time. If you prefer to save the playground as a treat for after the walk – go counterclockwise.
