From Tweng to the Almsee
ON LONELY, SOMETIMES DEMANDING PATHS, FROM TWENG TO THE TWENGER ALMSEE AND ON TO THE JUGENDHOTEL SCHAIDBERG IN OBERTAUERN.
It is certainly not the shortest route to the Twenger Almsee (2,120 m), which starts at the elementary school in the small village of Tweng (1,233 m) and ends at the Jugendhotel Schaidberg (1,621 m) in Obertauern. But it is probably the most interesting, impressive, and quietest ascent to this popular mountain lake. However, it is also demanding (T 3), the trail requires surefootedness and a head for heights. So if you meet these requirements, you are definitely on the right path. The reward for the effort is a magnificent waterfall right at the beginning in the Veitschengraben, then the alpine idyll at the Hofbauerhütte, surrounded by lush blooming flora and of course the Twenger Almsee. On very hot summer days, a swim in the lake is not at all out of the question; conveniently cool, there is also the managed Twenger Alm (1,900 m, managed mid-June to mid-September). The hike is of course also possible in the opposite direction starting from the Schaidberghaus 400 meters higher; this saves about an hour.

Directions
The trail to the Twenger Almsee, marked as taking 3.5 hours, starts at the elementary school and immediately gains considerable steepness. Soon the impressive waterfall appears; a short stretch of path is secured with a wire rope. Passing the remains of a barn, the steepness gradually decreases; after the "pure" larch forest, lush green alpine meadows appear around the Hofbauerhütte. The red-white marked path heads in a northern direction toward a ridge on which a strikingly large cairn stands. Behind it, the path leads like clouds over light red flower cushions, the blossoms and stems being only a few millimeters tall as a strategy against frost. After this flower path follows a short, steep descent over loose rock, then a small uphill climb before the lonely path merges into the main route to the Almsee. It is still 20 minutes uphill to the lake, an equally long but downhill walk to the Twenger Alm, and one should allow another hour to reach the Jugendheim Schaidberg bus stop. Â
