The fastest route to this destination

From Großgmain to the Open-Air Museum

An all-weather suitable family hike, with an optional detour to Plainburg and a guided tour through the rural living culture in the state of Salzburg at the open-air museum.

The ruins of Plainburg are so close to the hiking route that the 10-minute detour is definitely worth it. Although the viewing platform with a view of the identical castle Staufeneck at the foot of Hochstaufen no longer exists, the mighty inner courtyard of the castle hints at the former importance of the site. The hill was already settled in prehistoric times; the castle was built in the 11th century by the counts of Plain originating from Carinthia and was repeatedly adapted structurally until the 18th century according to needs. Perhaps the rustic Highland cattle, which we encounter at the highest point of the hike in Tannenwinkel, also existed back then. If you feel like it, a special treat awaits at the end of the path with the Großgmain Open-Air Museum. Those already too tired from hiking through the 5 Salzburg districts could also switch to the museum railway before bus 180 returns to the capital city.

Directions

From the bus stop Großgmain Lindenplatz, follow the signed route 404 (Latschenwirt) for the first 20 minutes to the junction to the access road for the Plainburg ruins. After visiting the castle, go a few meters back along the road, then turn left on path 56 through the beautiful high forest to a fork and now follow path 54 towards the Open-Air Museum. After crossing the road, the path leads along the forest edge with beautiful views of the shaggy Highland cattle and the Hochstaufen over the Tannenwinkel to the Latschenwirt inn (opening hours at www.latschenwirt.at). The path 52 to the Open-Air Museum branches off immediately to the left and runs along the state road to the destination in 45 minutes. Much nicer, and also somewhat shorter, is the forest alternative (path 50, Hasenweg), which leads a few meters above the inn away from the state road to the left. The bus stop Großgmain Open-Air Museum is located at parking lot level on the Großgmain state road.
