Set high above the Lungau, Mauterndorf Castle opens a window into a time when merchants, archbishops and travellers crossed the Alps. What feels today like a striking day-trip destination once served as an important toll station on the Tauern route and later as a summer residence for the Prince-Archbishops of Salzburg. That layered past still shapes the atmosphere of the castle today.
A visit leads you through grand rooms, the knights’ hall, the rock cellar and the castle chapel with its remarkable High Gothic frescoes. One of the most memorable features is the 44-metre defensive tower, now more than 700 years old. From the top, the views across the Lungau are impressive, while the interior offers vivid insights into life during a siege. Life-sized figures, carefully restored spaces and thoughtfully designed displays make the past feel close and tangible rather than distant or formal.
