Mönchsberg Circuit: Panoramic trail over Salzburg’s most beautiful city mountain

This varied tour leads over the Mönchsberg, one of Salzburg’s distinctive city mountains, which stretches like a green ridge along the old town and, with its meadows, forests, and historic sites, forms a popular local recreation area.

The starting point is the district of Mülln, conveniently accessible by train to the Mülln-Altstadt station or by bus to the Bärenwirt stop. From here, the ascent to the Mönchsberg begins, either via the Müllner Stiege or along Mönchsbergstraße and the Dr.-Ludwig-Prähauser-Weg up to the Müllner Schanze. Even on this first section, you quickly gain height and leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind.

After gaining further altitude, you reach the Johannes-Schlössl, a historic building dating from the 16th century, which is now used by the Pallottines and shapes the western part of the Mönchsberg. From here, the path leads onto the scenic panoramic trail along the rock edge, offering impressive views of Mülln, the old town, and the surrounding districts time and again.

Continuing on, follow the well-developed network of paths over the heights of the Mönchsberg. Along the way, you’ll pass the popular Stadtalm, which not only serves as a place to rest but also hosts one of the most famous viewpoints – the so-called Stadtaussicht. From here, you get an especially impressive view of the baroque old town with the Hohensalzburg Fortress as well as the surrounding mountain landscape.

The path continues with gentle ups and downs through wooded sections and over open areas, offering new perspectives of the city repeatedly. Eventually, you reach the Richterhöhe, at around 505 meters one of the highest elevations of the Mönchsberg. This distinctive viewpoint is characterized by historic fortification walls and towers and offers an especially wide panorama over the Salzburg basin, the Untersberg, and the Leopoldskroner Moos.

From Richterhöhe, follow the eastern panoramic trail further towards the old town, always accompanied by impressive views. Finally, the descent begins into the Kaiviertel, one of Salzburg’s oldest quarters. Upon arrival below, follow the Kaigasse to Kajetanerplatz, where one of the numerous drinking water fountains of the city of Salzburg stands!

The tour ends at the Justizgebäude, which is excellently connected to public transport and allows for an uncomplicated return journey with numerous bus lines.

Overall, this route offers an ideal combination of an easy city hike, cultural insights, and impressive views – one of the most beautiful ways to discover Salzburg car-free.
