From the Glan settlement to Leopoldskron Castle
The exciting walk for every weather condition on the outskirts of the state capital Salzburg encounters very different architectural monuments from the time of the archbishopric.
In earlier times, the otherwise quite quiet Glan could become a threatening body of water during heavy rain. Even the spiritual and secular ruler Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1587 – 1612) wanted to banish the danger with structural measures, which were then implemented by Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian in the 17th century. We encounter him again at the end of the path across the drained meadows of Gneis-Moos when we stand amazed in front of Leopoldskron Castle. The prince had the magnificent building erected as a summer residence; in 1918, Max Reinhardt, co-founder of the Salzburg Festival, acquired the by then dilapidated castle. Today, the non-profit organization “Salzburg Global” is housed here. The beautiful path from the “pacified” Glan to the magnificent fairy-tale castle thus opens up an interesting range between socio-political and prestige-oriented construction activity.  Â

Directions
The starting point of the moor and castle hike is the Schweizersiedlung stop (bus 27). Along Laschenskystraße, the path leads 200 m towards the city to the junction of Waldstraße into the Glan settlement on the right. The Glanbach is crossed, then the route runs 2 km along the bank on the left hand to the junction "Leopoldskron, path 404" on the right. At the Leopoldskron elementary school, the route meets Moosstraße, follows this 70 m to the left, and then branches off to the right into Josef-Moosbrucker-Weg.  At the end of the path, now sharply left into Guetratweg and 250 m later to the right into Zwieselweg, which passes the last moor forest remnants and reaches Leopoldskroner Weiher. Either turning left or right, circle the pond until the Schloss Leopoldskron stop (bus 11, 23) is reached directly beside the castle entrance.  Â
