River Hike from Oberscheffau to Unterscheffau

A great tip for hot days: hike through the spectacular Lammerklamm Gorge to Oberscheffau, and then continue either along the river or on the alpine trails to Unterscheffau.

Constant dripping wears away the stone. This saying is said to have originated with Ovid; it likely means that perseverance leads to success. Here in the Lammeröfen, over the course of millennia, constant dripping has created that fantastic world of stone that marks the beginning of the hike. The gorge has been open to tourists since 1884, but it must have been passable even before that, as the Lammer was an important waterway used to transport firewood to the Hallein saltworks. To give the Lammer—and its visitors—a chance to relax, a gentle stretch of the river follows, offering beautiful spots to rest. Or the trail continues further uphill, making a wide detour around the Sattelberg to the picturesque Schönalm (803 m), which is aptly named. Shortly before the endpoint at Unterscheffau, the two routes converge again.

Directions

The starting point is the Oberscheffau Lammeröfen bus stop (buses 470 and 471). From there, it’s a 10-minute walk uphill along the walking and biking trail to the gorge entrance (open from early April through late October). A short descent right at the start leads into the “Dunkle Klamm”; at the lower end of the 1-kilometer-long gorge, a spectacular suspension bridge awaits. In the village of Oberscheffau (where you can also start the hike), the route follows Trail 94 (“Unterscheffau”), first to the left over the car bridge and then to the right along the access road. After half an hour, the trails fork: the shorter and easier Route 94 along the Lammer River heads to the right, while the “alpine” variant (Trail 90) heads toward the Schönalm, picturesquely situated on a plateau. Following forest trails and rustic alpine paths, the route passes through the Infangalm area and descends back into the Lammertal valley. Shortly before the Lammer Bridge, the two routes converge again. The shared destination—the Gothic parish church of Unterscheffau, with the “Ortsmitte” bus stop directly in front of it—soon comes into view.
