Hochmoor Wasenmoos
Temporarily closedThe redesigned educational trail at Wasenmoos was opened in July 2024.
In front of the magnificent backdrop of the Hohe Tauern, the moor group is nestled in the Salzburg Schieferalpen at an altitude between 1200 and 1500 m. The presence of different moor types, which are closely intertwined with alder forests and the surrounding blueberry-spruce forests, requires the coexistence of many different habitats. Although partly affected by human interventions such as a former peat-ditch or the construction of numerous drainage ditches, the 180-hectare area is home to an impressive diversity of animal and plant species. By the way, the term “moss” stands for bogs with a high percentage of peat moss, while “wasen” refers to both a piece of lawn and a peat brick.
