SALZWELTEN SALZBURG

The White Gold Adventure

The adventure begins with a mine train ride deep into the Dürrnberg. You descend into the heart of the mountain via thrilling wooden slides and mysterious tunnels. A journey through four eras leads from modern mining and contemporary salt production, through the splendid Baroque period, the dark Middle Ages, and finally to the Celtic miners. The raft ride across the mystical salt lake transports you into the shimmering world of Baroque Salzburg. By the end of the journey, you’ll understand why salt is still considered the “essence of life.” Along the way, you’ll also cross the only underground state border between Austria and Germany.

Celtic Mountain

The Celtic Experience Mountain also tells the story of the significance of salt above ground. The Celtic village SALINA, the new salt manufactory, and a themed playground are best explored playfully with the Salzwelten app, which includes virtual adventure games and AR functionality.

SALT-MANUFACTORY

In place of the old “brine room,” a modern show saline has been built on the Celtic Experience Mountain. Visitors can experience up close how our high-quality, hand-scooped BAD ISCHLER gourmet salt is made from the Dürrnberg natural brine. The pan master on site explains the process and provides insights into his daily work.

SALINA CELTIC VILLAGE

Large parts of the Dürrnberg were already settled from 600 BC. The mining and trade of the “white gold” brought great wealth to the Iron Age population. Archaeologists have so far excavated and scientifically documented around 400 graves and many settlement remains. Rich grave finds such as the famous spouted jug, gold jewelry, weapons, and everyday items are now displayed in the Celtic Museum Hallein.

The reconstructed Celtic village SALINA, which you can see and touch, gives an impression of how the Celts lived 2,500 years ago. The small village on the Dürrnberg has been designed in close cooperation with researchers from the Celtic Museum Hallein according to current scientific knowledge.
