The adventure begins with a mine train ride deep into the Dürrnberg. Over fast wooden slides and mysterious tunnels, we descend into the heart of the mountain. A journey through four epochs takes you from modern mining and salt production today through the glorious Baroque era into the dark Middle Ages and finally back to the Celtic miners. A raft ride over the mystical salt lake transports you into the vibrant world of Baroque Salzburg. At the end of the journey, you will understand why salt is still regarded as the “essence of life.” And on the side, the only underground state border between Austria and Germany is crossed.
Celtic Mountain
The Celtic Mountain above ground also offers fascinating insights into the importance of salt. The Celtic Village, the new Salt Manufactory and the themed playground are best explored in a fun and interactive way with the new puzzle rally.
SALT MANUFACTORY
Instead of the old “Solestube,” a modern show saline has been established at the Celtic Experience Mountain. Visitors experience up close how our high-quality, hand-scooped BAD ISCHLER gourmet salt is created from the Dürrnberg natural brine. The master in charge explains the process and provides insights into his daily work.
CELTIC VILLAGE
Large parts of the Dürrnberg have been settled since 600 B.C. The extraction and trade of the “White Gold” brought great wealth to the Iron Age population. Archaeologists have uncovered and scientifically documented nearly 400 graves and many traces of settlements. Rich grave finds like the famous spouted jug, gold jewelry, weapons, and everyday items are now exhibited in the Celtic Museum in Hallein.
The reconstructed Celtic village to see and touch gives an impression of how the Celts lived 2500 years ago. In close cooperation with the researchers of the Celtic Museum in Hallein, the small village on the Dürrnberg has been designed based on current scientific findings.

Hello kids! It’s me, Sally, the clever mining duck! I live in the mine deep underground. I love to splash in the salt lake, waddle through the tunnels, and sing funny songs. But most of all, I like it when friends come to visit!
I will tell you lots of interesting facts about salt, we will discover secret tunnels together, and slide down old miner slides.
