Up to 1,853 metres with the Untersberg cable car
Experience the Untersberg and treat yourself to a break on one of the highest mountains near the city of Salzburg. The Untersberg is a mountain range stretching for around 70 km in the south-west of the Flachgau region on the border with Bavaria. The massif is accessible via the Untersberg cable car and hiking trails. On a clear day, you can enjoy an unforgettable 360° view.
Travel tip: Take trolleybus line 5 directly from the city to the foot of the Untersberg.

To the Flachgau with the Salzburg Local Railway
Whether for the daily commute to work and school or as a leisure partner, the Salzburg Local Railway is always the best connection from the city of Salzburg to the Innviertel region, offering a real alternative to private transport. If you want to take a break from the bustling city of Mozart, you can escape to the northern Flachgau region by taking a leisurely 38-kilometre train ride. At 1,287 metres, it offers hikers, day trippers and families ideal conditions for relaxation. From family-friendly walks to challenging hiking trails, there is something for every level of fitness. Whether you hike up and take the bus back down to the valley, or tackle the descent on foot after the bus ride, the Gaisbergspitze is easily accessible for everyone with the 151 bus line. The Gaisberg bus departs directly from Mirabellplatz and travels through the Gnigl district up to the Gaisbergspitze.

On a Narrow Gauge Through the Pinzgau
The Pinzgauer Lokalbahn is the ideal feeder service for all leisure enthusiasts who want to explore the most beautiful picturesque places in the national park region. The convenient bike transport on the train allows for a carefree and comfortable journey to the foot of the popular Tauern Cycle Path in Krimml (please note – currently only as far as Mittersill).
‘Ship Ahoy’ and ‘Train Departing’ at Wolfgangsee
For more than 125 years, Austria’s steepest cog railway has been taking enthusiasts up to the 1,783 m high Schafberg in St. Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut. The journey takes 30 minutes, and magnificent views and a pleasant ride are guaranteed! Perfect combination: the Schafberg Railway and Wolfgangsee boat trip can be perfectly combined with long or short hikes, and bicycles can be easily taken on board the boat.
