3 places – 3 castles: From Hallein via Oberalm to Puch

Just right for the transitional period: The weatherproof paths for marveling and viewing lead past the important Tennengau castles Wiespach, Kahlsperg, and Urstein.

The route between Hallein and Puch follows quiet streets in the first section, then a very quiet finale of the three-castle hike through the municipalities of Hallein, Oberalm, and Puch follows the landscape-protected Salzach meadow. Castle Wiespach, located directly next to the outdoor pool in Hallein, still strongly recalls its original significance as a knight’s fief from the 13th century with its layout. Today, a modern gallery and a charming café occupy the old walls. The present-day senior residence Castle Kahlsperg in Oberalm appears for the first time in 14th-century documents. Originally a water castle, a generous park area now surrounds the castle. Castle Urstein, impressively situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Salzach, was once surrounded by an elaborately designed garden. First mentioned in 1151, this magnificent house today is home to the “Research Campus Schloss Urstein” department. The associated modern lecture halls and accommodations of the Puch-Urstein University of Applied Sciences are located “one floor below.”

Directions

From the starting point Hallein station (west side), the path leads past the diagonally opposite post office and the district court, turns right, and follows Schwarzstraße over the Almbach to a crossroads. Now right along the street past the Hofer market and through the railway underpass over Wiespachstraße to the left to the Hallein outdoor pool and further to the castle Wiespach behind it. Continue over Wiespachstraße past the 250-year-old summer lime tree declared a natural monument into Pröllhofstraße for 1 km to the intersection with Kahlspergstraße. On the left along this past the senior residence Kahlsperg for 1.2 km to the intersection with Austraße. From here past the last houses of the settlement through the typical floodplain landscape to the towpath along the Salzach downhill. Soon the castle Urstein, towering high above the Salzach, appears. The direct connection leads straight to the train or bus stop Puch-Urstein; an even nicer option is the small detour right up to the castle and then in a loop along the edge of the unexpectedly large meadow downhill to the modern buildings of FH Puch.
