Above the roofs of the city of Salzburg

From Mozartplatz to Kapuzinerberg and along the Basteiweg with breathtaking views towards Schallmoos.

Within a short time, the route leads out of the lively old town with its many cafés and shops up to the tranquil oasis of Kapuzinerberg. With some luck, the famous city chamois can even be spotted up there around the historically valuable Basteiweg. In any case, the rock ledges and the old battlement are their territory. At a short, well-secured spot, hikers need surefootedness, but otherwise the Basteiweg impresses with breathtaking distant views of the Alps and close views of the old town. This was also intentionally designed for military reasons at the time of its creation under Prince-Archbishop Paris Count of Lodron (1586 – 1653). From the Franziskischlössl, formerly a barracks and today a restaurant, it goes back through Schallmoos to the urban bustle.

Directions

Following the Pre-Alpine path 804, the hike begins at Mozartplatz in the city of Salzburg. From the stations Rathaus, Mozartsteg, or Hanuschplatz, it is only a few minutes here. The marked route crosses the Salzach first via Mozartsteg, then Imbergstrasse and follows Steingasse to the left for 600 m to the ascent via the Imberg stairs (right). Almost at the end of the steep stairs, the Basteiweg begins on the right hand, which follows with constant ups and downs, except for a short bypass section of the battlement, to the highest point Franziskischlössl (638 m). The descent to Schallmoos branches off right and leads via partly steep stairs into the lively district. The next stops are Canavalstraße, Sterneckstraße and the Gnigl station stop (S 3, REX). Or 1.6 km along Schallmooser Hauptstraße and Linzergasse back to the Salzach with numerous connection options.
