Art walk in the city of Salzburg
ON THE „WALK OF MODERN ART“ THROUGH THE OLD TOWN
Is contemporary art only found in museums? Salzburg Foundation takes a very different approach. In the Old Town, 12 artworks are placed in public spaces – exactly at the locations where Markus Lüpertz, James Turrell, Brigitte Kowanz, and others conceived them between 2002 and 2011. There are the life-sized “cucumbers” that Erwin Wurm has installed in Furtwängler Park. Kapitelplatz is dominated by Stephan Balkenhol’s “Sphaera,” a monumental golden sphere on which a male figure wearing black trousers and a white shirt stands. Have you spotted the small lady in the red dress on the rock wall of the Toscaninihof? Marina Abramovic invites you to meditate at the busy intersection of Staatsbrücke. And Anselm Kiefer has built an entire art house in Furtwängler Park. Those who do not want to explore alone can join one of the free guided tours offered once a month by Sammlung Würth, which owns the works today. If you prefer something more individual, you can book a guided tour through the art mediation service Durchblick. Or simply drift and stroll through Salzburg’s Old Town on a mild summer evening. Who knows, perhaps an artwork is waiting just around the next corner?
