From Ebenau over the Strumberg to Faistenau
The first section to Strumberg offers rather limited views, but then, on the way further to Faistenau, spectacular views and insights open up.
Today, it is hard to imagine, but between 1585 and 1844 the idyllic village of Ebenau was an important industrial site focused on brass production. Some things from that era can still be seen today; a dedicated theme trail and especially the worthwhile museum in the Fürstenstöckl provide information. Before starting the hike to Faistenau, it is also worth taking an exclusive detour into the walkable, 54 m long water tunnel that powered the water wheels of the hammer mill. The following forest path to Strumberg (981 m) and the summit itself offer rather modest views, but on the descent, unexpected views and insights open up. First at the hut of the Prangerschützen and then at the Oberstrumberg farm, where the elderly farmer’s wife presents her artworks in the stylishly furnished and freely accessible “Zuahäusl”. The atmospheric weather cross on the way to Faistenau was also lovingly restored by her by hand. At the destination Faistenau, there’s still enough time for a walk, and the half-hourly return service certainly reduces pressure.

From the stop near the recycling center in Ebenau, the path leads through the village center up to the St. Florian Church and then branches off onto path 63 (Strumbergspitze). A viewing platform at the beginning and the “Göllblick” near the end offer views; otherwise, the steep, roughly one-hour forest ascent is mostly closed in and leads to the highest point, which is not very inviting. Much more atmospheric and with better views is the spot shortly afterward at the hut of the Prangerschützen. A pleasant descent on the farm road leads to Oberstrumberg farm, where there is much to discover: the creative elderly farmer’s wife and the young farmer take care of things. She paints; his specialty is the sensationally good ox meat, which is often already fully booked. The route follows the driveway for 1 km and then turns right onto path 64 at the next farm. The comfortable forest and meadow path leads to a fork, flanked by a widely visible weather cross. Two variants are possible: briefly follow the “Grabenweg” downhill towards Strubklamm-Straße, but then immediately turn left uphill again and at the first farm turn right through the ravine to Faistenau to the bus stop in the town center. Or, a bit shorter, from the weather cross follow the unmarked tractor trail uphill to the Ebnerwirt (open Fri, Sat) and then turn right, continuing along the foot of the Lidaun to the Faistenau Mechaniker Wörndl bus stop.
