From Großarl to the Kleinarltal

BETWEEN THE TWO VALLEYS THERE ARE MANY TRANSITIONS. A PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE ROUTE LEADS FROM THE ELLMAU VALLEY OVER THE SCENIC GRÜNDEGG TO KLEINARL.

You actually want to follow the broad ridge that separates the Großarl from the Kleinarltal forever. In both directions – north as well as south – there are wonderful ridge paths that stretch for hours to the most beautiful spots. A central elevation here is the Gründegg (2,168 m). Our valley-connecting high-altitude hike runs across this beautifully shaped pyramid. A colossal panorama opens up, determined eastwards by the opposite Kraxenkogel and westwards by the highest mountains in Austria. Sonnblick, Großglockner, and Hochwieskopf lie next to each other like beads on a string. The lovingly maintained alpine pastures and huts along the way are similar. They are also visual and culinary gems on this extraordinary pleasure hike.

Directions

The starting point is the Großarl Grundlehen bus stop (1,322 m) at the end of the Ellmautal. Route 62 (Gründegg) follows a wide alpine access road for a few meters and then branches off to the left onto a steep path. After half an hour, at a fork in the path, two equivalent options open up, both aiming for the Gründegg: left in two hours via the Ellmaualm (path 62) or right, 15 minutes shorter, past the 400-year-old Weißalm (path 61). After a lengthy summit rest, we follow route 87 northwards towards the Kleinarler Hut, which initially stays along the ridge and then crosses the saddle to the newly built Kleinarler Hut (1,756 m) to the right in 1.5 hours. The almost one and a half hour descent to Kleinarl follows hiking trail 712 or the less steep but longer hut access road. In the lowest section, a worthwhile short path variant branches off left from the Hirschleiten service road into the village.
