From Mattsee to Obertrum
The all-weather suitable, appealing route at any time of the year between the two picturesque towns circles the Buchberg on the east side.
You should take some time for the town of Mattsee at the starting point of the route. A good overview is achieved from the top of Schlossberg, and the manageable summit experience is also a nice substitute for the Buchberg, which is only circled on this route. The Schlossberg is also interesting from a geological perspective because the rocks of the Helveticum exposed here are practically the last tip of the Northern Calcareous Alps. There is enough space at the summit for an emperor memorial lime tree, and on the south side at the base of the Schlossberg, wonderful fossils can be seen that were deposited around 50 million years ago in a warm shallow sea. How the Bavarii lived in Mattsee around 1500 years ago is shown by the reconstructed farmsteads in Weyerbucht. But the Buchberg is also full of surprises. One of them is the charming Marienkapelle, which was originally built only for a festival parade wagon before it found its romantic place at Untermayerhof. The people of Mattsee are not only talented shipbuilders but also sustainable chapel builders.

Directions
From the Mattsee town centre bus stop, the path leads past the bank building through the recreational area in Weyerbucht and then along the lakeshore to a fork in the road. The signposted route M 4 ("Buchberg Circular Route") branches off slightly uphill to the left, crosses the state road after 1.2 km, and then follows the direction "Gasthof Mayrhof" for the next 2.5 km. The landscape-defining elements on the way there are the three Egelseen lakes, the solitary giant oak, and the beautiful mixed forest in which the romantic Marienkapelle stands. Before the Mayrhof inn (open Thu to Sun), the path branches off to the right and leads for 2.5 km past the farmsteads Hiab and Bodenstätt to the Tauchner farm. At the vacant, artistically slag-decorated house number 3, we leave route M 4 and follow the valley-leading farm road to the left. Passing the Lofer farmstead, this road meets the state road after 1.2 km. A first bus stop (Mattsee Außerhof) is 200 m further to the left, but the 1.5 km long path to Obertrum follows the tractor path opposite and then turning left follows the cycle route past the Billag shop into the town centre (stop).
