From Oberndorf to Bürmoos
Starting from the Salzach towns of Oberndorf and Laufen, the all-weather route leads up to Maria Bühel and continues over quiet paths to Bürmoos.
The formerly united districts of Oberndorf and Laufen are only separated by a bridge, but this 715-ton iron construction has an elegance unmatched by any other Salzach bridge. Therefore, every crossing is pure pleasure, and the views over the Salzach range from the late medieval collegiate church to the Berchtesgaden Alps. Long before the EU, in 1903, a joint project between Austria-Hungary and the Kingdom of Bavaria was realized here. Costs were shared, and the bridge, unlike its wooden predecessors, withstood all floods. Another highlight of the hike is the baroque pilgrimage church Maria Bühel, which owes its origin to Salzach shipping, as boatmen were meant to ‘have good thoughts’ as they passed by. The further, no longer continuously marked route to the former glass industry town Bürmoos now follows mostly rarely used farm tracks.

From the Oberndorf Laufen local train stop, the path runs 200 m along Untersbergstraße towards the center and then turns left onto the federal highway, which leads over the magnificent Länder bridge into the town of Laufen. A tour through the almost fully preserved medieval old town is highly rewarding before the path returns to Austrian territory via the Europasteg built in 2006. Passing the bridge saint Johannes Nepomuk, the route gains some elevation via the steep Kalvarienberg stairs and reaches the long-visible Maria Bühel church 1 km later. Now 100 m further to the state road, along this 100 m to the left, then turn right. After 400 m, at the chapel in Buchach, turn left and continue on the tractor path to the clearly visible wayside cross. Now turn right through the farm group Aglassing until the municipal road makes a sharp left turn after 1.2 km. Here, unfortunately unmarked, go straight into the forest, cross the Pladenbach over an iron footbridge, and shortly after turn right to follow the Stierlingwaldstraße for 1.5 km to the new Bürmoos station.
