From St. Leonhard near Grödig via Eichet to Anif

The exciting cultural walk follows the Almkanal and the Marble Way, passes the oldest run-of-river power plant in Salzburg and ends in the wellness resort Anif.

The water from the Königsee, which is channeled via the Hangenden Stein weir near Grödig through the Almkanal into the city of Salzburg, drives 18 power plants. The listed Eichetmühle power plant is a particularly fascinating example. It started operation in 1899; nine years later, the power increase required by the electrification of the tramway took place and since then the plant, owned by Salzburg AG, has been running almost in its original condition. But the effect of the underground currents along this route is also remarkable: the city of Salzburg is supplied with the best drinking water via the groundwater wells in St. Leonhard and Glanegg. Not only water but also the highly praised white Untersberg marble comes from the Untersberg. Along this all-weather suitable walk, there are also wonderful examples of this. After so much interesting information, the second part of the route across the sunny fields of Anif is the section for dreaming and strolling.

Directions

From the bus terminal Grödig Untersbergbahn, the path leads along federal road 160 over the traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossing and turns left into Mitterweg after 100 m. Passing Leonharderhof, the gravel meadow path crosses the huge underground groundwater well and meets the Almkanal at the community office. Along this calm water, it continues to the right turn into Schützenweg. Worthwhile here is the short detour on the left to the church and the marketplace with the Prähauser-Christophorus fountain made of Untersberg marble. After the motorway underpass, the Eichetmühlweg (path 41) turns left and follows the Almkanal to the industrial monument Eichetmühle power plant. An unsigned tractor path runs right over the field and then again joins the Waldeggerweg (path 40) on the right side. Past the experience farm with charming chickens, pigs, and goats, the narrow asphalt path reaches a fork at a striking solitary tree. Now turn right here and at the next junction turn left along Dr.-Franz-Burda-Straße into the center of Anif. The next bus stop “Anif-Friesacher” is centrally located on Hellbrunner Straße, a little further away is the stop Schlosswirt Alpenstraße.
