Grossvenediger between Neukirchen and Matrei

High route on the highest mountain (3657 m) in the state of Salzburg.

For alpine experienced climbers: A relatively simple high route to the glaciated summit of the Grossvenediger, the highest mountain in the state of Salzburg, also called “ancient majesty.” The route is not too technically difficult and is therefore suitable for fit high route beginners. Due to the danger of crevasse falls, however, go only with a mountain guide or alpine training! The approach to Kürsingerhütte is described in another route. If the weather cooperates, you will be rewarded at the summit of Großvenediger with a breathtaking 360° view of many surrounding mountain groups! But you won’t see Venice even in the best weather.

Directions

From the Kürsingerhütte (2,548 m) follow hiking trail 902 to the glacier. From here the trail is usually broken. At the end, due to glacier retreat, it goes a bit downhill to the belay point. From here the trail is usually broken. First, you cross some crevasse zones heading towards Kleinvenediger, then surmount a steeper section over the edge crevasse ladder up to the Venediger notch. From the notch, where there is a wonderful view of the mountain world in good weather, continue to the fore summit. Then continue over a ridge, which depending on the conditions can be icy and exposed, to the summit, which you reach after about 4.5 hours. The descent is on the same path as the ascent. Afterwards, depending on preference, descend to the taxi at the material cable car or spend another night at the hut. Equipment: Complete high route and glacier equipment
