MOZART AND MOHR ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SALZACH
Music is in the air in Salzburg. With Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Mohr, the city produced two great sons in the 18th century whose names have forever been written into the annals of music history – albeit for very different reasons. While Mozart left the world an equally significant and extensive body of work, Joseph Mohr achieved worldwide fame with just one song. Every child today knows the lyrics of “Silent Night! Holy Night!” Already on the Neustadt side of the Salzach, you can get very close to both artists: at Markartplatz, Mohr attended the seminary, and Mozart lived and made music in the so-called Tanzmeisterhaus, which is now known as the “Mozart Residence.” Stroll further along Dreifaltigkeitsgasse and the Platzl directly into the medieval charm of Steingasse. Across the majestic Staatsbrücke bridge, you then cross to the Old Town side. Mozart and Mohr were baptized in the same font in the cathedral. And then there is, of course, the famous yellow house with house number 9. Mozart’s birthplace is now one of the most visited museums in the world.
