From Taxenbach through the Kitzloch Gorge to Embach

From the cool, secretive world of the Rauriser Ache, up into the sun-flooded plain around the picturesque village of Embach.

The Kitzloch Gorge could tell many stories: of treasure hunters motivated by the gold mountains at the valley end, of hermits seeking contemplative peace in the caves, or of the runaway kid that gave the gorge its name. Nowadays, the gorge features well-secured walkways, about 400 steps, spectacular viewing platforms, and an exciting via ferrata with difficulty grades B, C, and D. After the gorge comes the light, especially brightly concentrated in the small pilgrimage chapel Maria Elend, which was visited so much that the construction of the large church in nearby Embach became necessary. From there, an early return trip by bus is possible. The start also allows variations: either from Taxenbach-Rauris station on the signposted path through the village and past below the church via the Dechantsfeldstraße turnoff to the right to the Taxenbach Dechantsfeld bus stop on the federal road, or, about 40 minutes shorter, start exactly here.

Directions

From the Taxenbach Dechantsfeld bus stop, the path leads across the meadow past the sports and tennis courts on the left up to the Schlossberg (path 6) equipped with imaginative stations. The ship in the castle wall inspires awe, the book arbor invites reading, and the low rope course challenges your balance. Path 6 merges on the right into the driveway to the gorge entrance (path 4). After 1.5 km, at the end of the fantastic gorge, the connecting path 4 branches off to Maria Elend (Embach). The path crosses the state road and becomes increasingly scenic uphill to the Augenbründl by the pilgrimage chapel. The return path 4 passes just below the forest café and meets the state road again 25 minutes later on the outskirts of Embach. Along this road 80 m to the left, then right, and finally steeper downhill again left, always sufficiently marked, it takes 45 minutes back to the gorge entrance and then to the station or bus stop.
