With lake and alpine views from Köstendorf-Weng to Henndorf

An all-weather suitable walk on the edge of the Natura 2000 – Wenger Moor protected zone and along the Wallersee east bay into the literary hub Henndorf.

Right next to the Weng stop is the hamlet of the same name, at the highest point of which there used to be a medieval tower. Nothing is left of it, but the view towards the lake already whets the appetite for the forthcoming path. It is paved with small and large special features, such as the ice age conglomerate rock that appears at the very beginning like a foreign body in the flat moor landscape. Incredible is the plant and animal diversity that has developed on this consolidated gravel: a species-rich hillside forest is just as much part of it as rare lilies or rare representatives from the bird world. Many of the feathered friends later find their ideal breeding and living spaces in the moist meadows. Therefore, these areas must not be entered. However, there are still plenty of places to get in and out at the Wallersee. Two public beaches including refreshment stations and several small bays wait along the route, before at the end in the literary village Henndorf you can discover “exquisite” fare by Carl Zuckmayer (including “The Captain of Köpenick”), Thomas Bernhard (including “Frost”) or Franz Stelzhammer (including the text of the Upper Austrian anthem).

Directions

From the Köstendorf-Weng train station, the path leads through the hamlet to the small church at the highest point and turns along the edge of the settlement to the left into the cycle route towards Neumarkt. Past the “hillside forest habitat,” it first goes diagonally over the meadows, then through the monotonous spruce forest, before the magnificent view of the Wallersee and the Berchtesgaden Alps opens up again. At the Wierer farm, the path leads down stairs into the east bay, where there are inviting refreshment and bathing spots. Shortly after the beach café, the path turns right and leads into the forest for 2 km. After 1 km, in front of a house, there is a worthwhile variant via the “Marieninsel” (Marien Island) with an unmarked path leading off to the right. The atmospheric Marien memorial site is located far right (N) at the outermost end of the bay, but our shore path turns left and after 1 km in front of a fancy lakeside villa rejoins the main path. Past the natural monument “Two Lindens in Henndorf,” the route reaches Henndorf beach and here turns left uphill into the town center (stop).
