Gastein high path from Bad Gastein to Bad Hofgastein

A WARMING HIKING PLEASURE ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE GASTEIN VALLEY WITH A VIEW OF THE GOLDBERG GROUP.

When the shadows in the Gastein Valley grow longer and the days shorter, the sun-flooded Gastein high path is just the thing. Of course, spring is also a suitable season, but winter damages may not yet be repaired at that time. Therefore, please check the website (see info) before the tour. The almost six-kilometer path gently crosses the southwest-facing slopes of the Gamskarkogel. So pure sun, but also some deeply incised ravines characterize the route. The most spectacular is the Gadaunerer Gorge, which has been crossed since spring 2021 by a sophisticated tunnel system. When the Gastein high path was opened in 1934, there was a bridge here, which after a devastating storm event in 1958 was replaced by tunnels, later several for safety reasons. Steel nets provide additional protection.

Directions

The direction in which the high path is walked is a matter of taste; in any case, it runs from Cafe Gamskar to Cafe Gamskar. Such a cafe exists both in Bad Gastein and in Bad Hofgastein. The more comfortable, downhill variant starts at the Bad Gastein Grüner Baum stop in front of the former luxury hotel and follows the feeder to the "Martin-Lodinger-Höhenweg" down the valley. For a quarter of an hour, the path still runs through the forest, then the terrain brightens and soon goats graze on the steep sunny slopes. The adventurously twisted horns can easily be imagined on a Gastein Krampus mask. It doesn't take long before a mask carver also really offers his masks. Repeatedly, sun benches invite you to rest; soon after the magnificent Gadaunerer Gorge, the wonderfully renovated Rauchberg mill recalls bygone times. The path nears its end; after the Cafe Gamskar it branches left into the center of Bad Hofgastein. The pointed church tower is a good guidepost; from there you pass the Alpentherme and then cross the Gastein Ache to the bus station.
