The Mill Route of Ebenau

FIVE OLD GRAIN MILLS AND AN IMPOSING WATERFALL

They tell stories from the good old days: of clattering water wheels that tirelessly turned in circles, of heavily loaded ox carts transporting sacks of grain along narrow field paths, and of cozy mill parlors where farmers and millers waited together for the finished flour. As arduous as life in the countryside was, the ancient mills in Ebenau appear today as wildly romantic to us. Take the time to look inside. In total, five of these venerable buildings line the circular path. And where you encounter water mills at every step, running water is naturally never far away. Although “running” is not always the right term. It is common to see the river overcoming a few steps on the way, but the waterfall of the natural monument Plötz rushes 25 meters deep. Those who are hardy or visit in summer can even take a cool bath in its rock basin. It is good that the path is suitable for families with children when wearing sturdy footwear. Where the path leads through the forest, it is steep and can be quite slippery when the ground is covered with wet leaves. However, there are only just under 200 meters of elevation to overcome, and with a length of five kilometers, the circular route is fairly short.

Directions

From the Ebenau Plötz stop to the waterfall is about a 15-minute pure walking time, passing five mills along the way. Those tackling the circular hiking trail with a view of the Watzmann should plan another 1.5 to 2 hours.
