Small Border Traffic

A CROSS-BORDER HIKE BETWEEN GROSSGMAIN AND BAD REICHENHALL.

Although the German-Austrian border runs between Großgmain and Bad Reichenhall, for the people living in the “Gmain” there are no borders. Neither linguistic, nor geographical, nor cultural. On this hike across Marzoll and the Kirchholz ridge there are many commonalities but not a single border tree. That was not always the case. When Erich Kästner’s satire “Der Kleine Grenzverkehr” was written, Austria was under massive pressure from Nazi Germany’s 1000-mark ban. When the novel appeared in Switzerland in 1938, Austria was already part of the German Reich.

Today, people from both sides can fully enjoy the special features. These include at the very beginning the romantic Schloss Marzoll, rebuilt in Tudor style, followed by a wonderfully relaxing forest path before the route passes the Romanesque basilica St. Zeno and many inviting cafés through the spa town of Bad Reichenhall to the final stop Tiroler Tor.

Directions

From the stop Großgmain Abzweigung Latschenwirt, the route follows the westward running cycle path into the district of Marzoll. Past the church and the castle, shortly afterwards the signage pointing left "St. Zeno, Bad Reichenhall" begins. The path crosses a stream, then a short terrain step and meets an old border stone dated 1818. In the background, the "Sleeping Witch", a rock formation on the eastern ridge of the Lattengebirge, is clearly visible. The "St. Zeno" path leads with a nice view of the Hochstaufen slightly downhill to the Obermühl inn, crosses the street and at a fork turns right. The straight path "Bad Reichenhall town center" leads to the definitely worth-seeing church St. Zeno, already mentioned in the 8th century. Along Salzburger Straße it goes to the Royal Spa Garden with its huge promenade hall, then along Bahnhofstraße, Spitalgasse, and Poststraße to the Rathausplatz. There, turn left on Salinenstraße and Tirolerstraße to the bus stop Tiroler Tor (also: "Stop Wegezentrum 5").
