From Golling along the Salzach to Kuchl

Following the decelerating flow speed of the Salzach downstream through the wonderful floodplain landscape to Kuchl or Kuchl-Garnei.

Over long stretches, the riverside path shows how much space the Salzach once had available and what the river did with it. Wonderful, wide-reaching bays have formed, where depending on the flow conditions, finest sand or beautifully shaped gravel is deposited. In any case, wonderful places to rest, play, or philosophize. In Kuchl-Bürgerau, the Salzach’s deposits were extensively extracted for various construction projects, resulting in an excellent bathing lake from the gravel pit, which also meets the needs of sport fishermen. In Kuchl, the walk could end after about 4 km or you can continue along the Salzach to the Kuchl Garnei train stop.

Directions

From Golling-Abtenau station, the unmarked path follows Bahnhofstraße 600 m north and turns left at the first railway underpass. The Salzach then dictates the further course, with exits opening repeatedly into the bays. After 3 km, the nature-connected community of Kuchl demonstrates how it supports the extremely important but also heavily threatened wild bees for pollination with its own wild bee house. Shortly thereafter, the fjord-like Bürgerausee, the imaginative playground, or the pleasant refreshment spot invite you to linger. Kuchl station is just a few minutes away on the right. If you still want to extend the route by 4 km to Kuchl-Garnei, continue along the Salzach past the scout home and the construction yard, going under the motorway bridge after 1 km. The wide service road leads through typical floodplain forest, with the allotment garden settlement on the right almost invisible, then there is a short forest section, from which a tractor path crosses the meadow past a striking farmstead and reaches the farms in Kuchl Garnei. Directly behind is the access to the train stop.
