ON SNOWSHOES TO THE CHAPEL OF THE PROTECTOR SAINT OF HUNTERS

When the forest is deeply snow-covered and the winter sun shines from the sky, it’s the perfect day for a hike into the enchanted white landscape of the Auer meadows. Pack your snowshoes or borrow a pair at the nearest winter sports shop. An incomparable natural experience, which begins in the picturesque holiday town of Lofer, in the heart of the Salzburg Saalachtal, awaits you.

Enjoy the magnificent view of the town and the Loferer Steinberge from the elevation of the old miners’ stable, which you reach via a forest path. Maybe the old wooden bench is covered in snow, or you’re lucky and the hikers before you have cleared it. A view like this should be absorbed, and that’s best done sitting down. The small path to the Hubertus Chapel leads directly behind the seminar building of the Lofer chocolate confiserie Berger. The small chapel is dedicated to the protector saint of hunters, but the tracks in the snow reveal that his possible prey also feels very comfortable here. Enjoy the silence and the whisper of the small creek before heading back. After a long day outside, a hot herbal tea by the warm fireplace tastes even better.

Directions

You do need a bit of fitness: the nine-kilometer circular route starts at the Lofer tourist office and leads over the Teufelssteg, Bairau, Wahpointweg and Au to the Hubertus Chapel. Via the Knappenstadl hiking trail, Scheffsnoth, and the Hubertus footbridge, it returns to Lofer. Most sections of the trail are cleared or have packed snow tracks, so snowproof, high hiking boots with a good non-slip sole should suffice. Still, bring snowshoes and poles to be optimally equipped.
