From Hof to Thalgau

THERE IS MUCH TO SEE: DOWN INTO THE SCHWARZMÜHLGRABEN, PAST THE RAUCHHAUS MÜHLGRUB AND THEN ACROSS ORCHID MEADOWS DOWN TO THALGAU.

The straight-line distance between Hof and Thalgau is just four kilometers, and furthermore, the village of Thalgau lies 200 meters lower. But fortunately for the view, the farms, and the hiking trail, there is a gentle ridge, the Langenholz, between them that must first be overcome. On this ridge, presumably cleared in the 13th century, there is the Rauchhaus Mühlgrub, a unique rural cultural monument that provides insights into past ways of life. Until 1983, the Schöndorfer family lived in the almost completely unmechanized Mühlgrubhof: no electricity, water from the Leierbrunnen in front of the farm, and an open fireplace as the only source of heat and cooking for the whole house. Today, the monument farm is owned by the municipality; it can be visited by prior arrangement and atmospheric events take place throughout the year.

Directions

From the Hof Ortsmitte bus stop, the route goes left past the church and follows Schwarzmühlstraße steeply down into the valley. The Fuschler Ache is crossed; route 19 “Thalgau via Rauchhaus” passes Schwarzmühlkapelle and then climbs back up through the forest, turning right to the nearby Rauchhaus. Even if the interiors are not currently open to visitors, the exterior grounds offer good views and the house benches provide wonderful rest opportunities. Half a kilometer after the Ohleitenkapelle, the marked path turns left and leads past a row of houses across the meadow into the forest. The slightly swampy clearings are ideal areas for rare orchids, cowslip primroses, or globe flowers. Soon the church tower in Thalgau is visible; the well-marked half-hour path follows Hof access roads and meadow trails. The Thalgau Ortsmitte stop is diagonally opposite the church.
