Tracing around Mattsee

FROM THE COLLEGIATE CHURCH IN MATTSEE TO THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE BUCHBERG. RETURN ALONG THE OBERTRUM LAKE WITH A DETOUR TO THE ROMANTIC WARTBERG CHAPEL.

The lake, the forest and the collegiate Mattsee monastery have sustainably shaped the landscape and the inhabitants. Fishing in Mattsee was for centuries a profitable trade with precisely defined rights and duties. The monastery, founded around 757 by Duke Tassilo III, was the administrative centre and provided work for many people. The modern bronze sculpture by Salzburg artist Lotte Ranft in front of the impressive collegiate church of St. Michael depicts the founder Duke Tassilo. The entertaining route moves between the three points market, Buchberg and lake and offers lively background information on the development of the Mattsee region thanks to many display panels. What is interesting about this trace search is not only the more recent past. With the ascent of the Wartstein rock there is, in addition to the magnificent panoramic view, a geographical highlight as we stand here on the easternmost outlier of the Helveticum. So in a way at the geological end of the Alpine arc.

Directions

The route begins at the central bus stop Mattsee town centre opposite the collegiate church. The path leads right past the Sparkasse and shortly afterwards encounters the reconstructed Bavarian village, another important chapter in Mattsee's history. Straight on it goes through the Weyerbucht past the sports field and the school, turning left once towards Stampfweg and up a stairway to Köstendorfer Landesstraße. This is crossed, then the forest trail temporarily follows the signposting "Buchberg M 3" up to the Vogelhütte car park. Now along the "Forstweg 5 Römersberg" for 1 km to a modern wooden sculpture. Here the path "Mattsee via Römersberg" branches off to the right. After merging onto an access road, follow this wonderfully scenic route down towards Mattsee Landesstraße. After crossing, straight ahead into the district of Anzing. After the road underpass, the 15-minute detour to the "Wartstein Chapel" branches off to the right. Back at the fork, the path runs on the right along the shore of Obertrum Lake around the striking rock nose on which the chapel stands, and leads along the foot of the ridge back to the collegiate church. Now left to the lake promenade and then right around the Schlossberg back to the bus stop town centre at the marketplace.
