Kaprun Museum

Discover Kaprun’s history – from rural life and early tourism to the construction of the famous power plants.

At the Kaprun Museum, you explore the rich history of the village and its surroundings. Housed in the more than 300-year-old Steinerbauernhaus, the exhibition combines historic architecture with a modern and varied presentation of regional life.

The museum focuses on the development of Kaprun and the lives of its people over the centuries. You’ll learn how the village evolved from a rural farming community into a centre of tourism and energy production. Topics such as the construction of the Kaprun power plants, the early days of mountaineering and the rise of glacier skiing are presented in an engaging and accessible way. Original objects, historic photographs and interactive displays provide insight into everyday life, craftsmanship and traditions of the region. The exhibition also covers early settlement, mining and cultural heritage.

A special highlight awaits outside: from spring to autumn, traditional bread is baked in the historic oven – a living tradition you can see, smell and taste. Temporary exhibitions in the nearby Machlhütte add variety and make each visit unique.
