Among historic exhibits and old processing machinery, the story of gold mining in the Gastein mountains comes to life.

At the Montanmuseum Altböckstein, you step into the rich history of gold mining in the Gastein mountains. The exhibition takes you back to a time shaped by wealth, hard labour and technical progress – a period that had a lasting impact on the region.

Original exhibits and historic ore-processing machines vividly illustrate how mining once worked. You’ll learn how gold extraction developed from the 14th century onwards, which key figures and mining families influenced its growth, and why the Gastein Valley became one of the most important mining areas of its time. The peak years of production are also clearly explained. The museum is housed in the former 18th-century salt storehouse in Böckstein. This simple yet historic building adds a special atmosphere and tells its own part of the story.

A modern audio guide accompanies your visit, allowing you to explore the world of historic gold mining at your own pace.
