From Unternberg in Lungau to Mariapfarr

A path that is just as straightforward as it is calming leads over the gentle Mitterberg across the Lungau basin.

The peaceful Unternberg and the sunny Mariapfarr are quite different towns in the Lungau, but both can point to very extraordinary churches. In the magnificent church in Mariapfarr, Joseph Mohr wrote the text of the Silent Night song in 1816; 202 years later, the pilgrimage church was even elevated to the rank of a minor basilica.  The parish church in Unternberg was so dilapidated that it had to be partly demolished. The star architect Heinz Tesar (1939 – 2024) added a new transverse wing but skillfully integrated the chancel with the baroque high altar. The people of Unternberg can handle extraordinary circumstances well. The slope behind the church started to slide and threatened the village. With a brilliant construction, the slide was stopped. Today, the safe path leads over this meadow, meets a mighty weather cross, and the romantic Friml Chapel before continuing towards Mariapfarr.

Directions

The starting point is the Unternberg village center stop, into which the beautiful village fountain is also integrated. Opposite, the "Ackerbox," open around the clock, invites you to last-minute provisions, then the Haltgasse turns right. The route first follows path 88 (Himmelsteigweg), then after joining the paved farm access road, directs toward the "Friml Chapel." Two ancient Swiss stone pines flank the pretty chapel (1358 m). The saddle located somewhat above marks about the halfway point of the roughly 3-hour route and is also already the highest point of the hike. The rest of the trail mostly follows forest roads, either via Stranach or Pichl to the first stops at B 95. Mariapfarr is clearly visible already; the route crosses the Taurach and reaches Mariapfarr about half an hour later.

By public transport
