From A to B around Lake Egelsee
Family-friendly hike through the nature of the Tennengau region to the Egelsee lake near Abtenau.
The market town of Abtenau in the Tennengau region, south of Salzburg, is the starting point for this varied hike. The destination is the Egelsee, a small, idyllic moorland lake surrounded by largely untouched nature and offering an unobstructed view of the Tennengebirge mountains. The lake and its surroundings have been a protected landscape since 1971. Until the late 1950s, the lake was used for peat baths in the then-spa town of Abtenau. The route leads along forest and meadow paths and offers diverse insights into the local flora and fauna. Meadows full of wildflowers, cows grazing in their pastures, and, with a bit of luck, grey herons on the lakeshore, contribute to the special charm of this hike. Abtenau itself, with its lively market square, numerous restaurants and cafes, and charming architecture, invites you to linger.
This family-friendly hike is recommended in every season. In winter, the frozen lake retains its unique character and is just as beautiful and impressive as in summer.

The tour begins at the Abtenau town center bus stop. From there, follow the road west to the market square, where you turn right. Passing the colorful inns, you'll reach the Roman Catholic parish church on your right. Here, turn left and continue past the hospital and kindergarten before the route turns right again. The path then continues straight ahead and after a few hundred meters enters a forest. From here, the Egelsee circular hiking trail is signposted with the number R33. Following the yellow signs, after leaving the forest, you'll cross the hamlet of Kehlhof and continue the hike towards Egelsee. If you'd like to reach the shore directly and rest on a bench by the water, briefly leave the gravel path and follow a small trail to the lake. The route then leads through the hamlet of Ehrfeld back to Abtenau. After the town sign, the Abtenau adventure pool is on your left. A few minutes' walk further on, the elementary school is on the opposite side of the street. From there you reach the main road and the Abtenau Weizfeld bus stop, from which lines 470 and 471 run towards Salzburg. Alternatively, the loop can be completed in full. To do this, continue following the Fischbach stream towards the town center and you will eventually return to the starting bus stop.

By public transport
- From Salzburg Central Station, take the R3 regional train (towards Saalfelden) to Golling-Abtenau station and from there the 471 regional bus to Abtenau town center.
- From Abtenau Weizfeld, take the 470 regional bus (towards Hallein station) to Golling-Abtenau station and from there the R3 regional train or another long-distance train service back to Salzburg Central Station.
