Panoramic walk in Großgmain
A peaceful forest walk through the diverse landscape around the state border near Großgmain, perfect for families.
Contrary to what one might assume, the “Mais” (corn) in the name of the Maisrundweg (Corn Trail) probably doesn’t refer to the plant. The term likely originates from the Bavarian-Austrian dialect region, where “Mais” denotes a recently cleared or felled section of forest.
Today, however, the trail presents itself as an idyllic forest path and offers a varied break for the whole family. Along the way, beautiful views of the Lattengebirge and Hochstaufen mountains open up. Several stations with play areas and information about local vegetation provide variety. Rest areas also invite you to take a relaxing break.
This easy loop is particularly suitable for warm summer days or for a short escape from city life. In some sections, the path runs alongside the Weißbach stream, whose proximity provides welcome refreshment on hot days. However, the stream is not an official swimming area.

Directions
The starting point is the Großgmain Staatsgrenze bus stop. From there, the route leads towards the border and then turns left onto Weißbachstraße. Follow this road upstream along the Weißbach stream. At the end of the road, cross Berchtesgadener Straße via a pedestrian crossing. The route then continues west along the road for a few meters before turning left onto Friedhofstraße. Passing the Bergfriedhof cemetery, a forest path leads straight ahead to the Maisrundweg (Corn Trail). From here, follow the Maisrundweg signs to the Maximiliansweg on the Bavarian side. For the return to Großgmain, turn right onto Lattenbergstraße. The route passes the spa gardens of Bayerisch Gmain and joins a farm track, which you follow until you turn left onto the toll road. From here, it's just a few meters to the right back to the Staatsgrenze bus stop.
