European protected area “Luzia Lacke”

A small European protected area with remarkable diversity: at Luzia Lacke you’ll find peatland, reeds and ponds – surrounded by rare species and botanical treasures.

On the western edge of Niedernsill, Luzia Lacke is a precious remnant of the wetland landscape that once shaped the valley floor of the Upper Salzach Valley. Today, reeds, wet meadows, peatland and small ponds form a mosaic of habitats – a refuge for species that have become rare elsewhere.

With a bit of luck, you may hear the European tree frog on warm days or spot the yellow-bellied toad, which depends on small, muddy puddles and ponds. Water frogs also occur here. Above the water, dragonflies patrol the reeds – and particularly noteworthy is a record of the large white-faced darter, a very rare dragonfly in Austria.

Botanically, Luzia Lacke is just as special. The site supports the shining hook-moss (Hamatocaulis vernicosus), a species in strong decline across Europe and of outstanding importance in this region. And there’s another local highlight: to the west of Luzia Lacke you’ll find the only site in Pinzgau where the Siberian iris grows – a true gem for plant lovers.

This is not a place for rushing – it’s a place for slowing down, watching closely and enjoying quiet nature. Please stay on paths and be considerate: the wildlife here depends on calm and undisturbed habitats.
