Fort Kniepass

Fort Kniepass combines historic walls, an interactive themed trail and a spectacular slide into a day out full of history, views and family adventure.

Fort Kniepass is a place where history feels present rather than distant. Rising above the Saalach Valley, this former border fortification stands at a site that once held real strategic importance. In the Middle Ages, goods were checked and routes secured here; today, the setting has been reimagined as a varied destination that explores the idea of borders from many different angles.

The climb to the fort is already part of the experience. Along the interactive themed trail, twelve stations invite you to reflect on borders in nature, language, society and everyday life. Questions, playful elements and thoughtful prompts make the walk engaging for both adults and children. By the time you reach the top, the historic complex opens up not only to the past, but also to wide views across the Saalachtal.

Set against this historical backdrop is the Viper-Slide, which adds a completely different kind of thrill. The long enclosed slide leads back down into the valley and brings speed, fun and a sense of adventure to the visit. Events, workshops and regional food offerings add yet another layer, linking culture, activity and enjoyment in a way that feels fresh and surprisingly well balanced. Fort Kniepass is therefore much more than a historic site – it is a place of movement, reflection and shared experiences.
